Michel Autran is relateively new to the Loire Valley’s winemaking scene, though he is a force to be reckoned with. After 20 years of working in emergency medicine, Michel decided to make a career switch to the world of winemaking in his early 40s. After working alongside some of the Loire’s best (Frnacois Pinon and Ludovic Chanson, for example), Michel was able to purchase one hectare of vines to call his own. Today, he farms 3.8 hectares of vines all organically, all of which are massale selection plantings from old vine Pinon fruit. Fruit for ‘Ciel Rouge’ is hand-harvested and fermented with native yeasts in steel, followed by aging in barrel. Notes of citrus pith, green apple, white flowers, silex, and honey dominate this complex and textured wine. Drink now or lay down for a few years.
